Welcome to Blencathra Stone Craft
What do we do?
We make just about anything from Lakeland slate. Including fireplaces,
worktops, lamps,
clocks, coffee tables, slabs, tiles, house nameplates and numbers,
crazy
paving, garden
furniture, water features, headstones
& memorial plaques.
We also make custom granite worktops.
Commissions are undertaken to work in either slate or granite.

About Blencathra Stone Craft
Blencathra Stone Craft was established in Keswick, Cumbria in 1966 by Mr W E Tyson.
After being made redundant from Honister Quarry, he decided to set-up his own
business in his garage. Now after 35 years of trading, the company boasts 5 members
of staff and 2760 sq. ft. of factory space complete with a showroom that is open
6 days a week.
What is slate?
Lakeland green slate was originally fine grained volcanic ash ejected during outbursts
from volcanoes before the ice age, over 450 million years ago. The layers of ash
were compressed under enormous pressure and heated to a great temperature to form
the metamorphic rock known as slate. Its unique colouration comes from the mineral
chlorite and it often exhibits evidence of quartz intrusions. It has great tensile
and compressive strength, as well as being a poor conductor of heat, non-porous
and incombustible. It was originally used for roofing tiles and buildings but
the advancement of diamond saws and polishers has enabled its use for architectural
and decorative work as you can see from the photographs in the relevant sections.
Trade Customers
We are happy to supply to exterior and interior designers as well as builders
and gift shops. We will dispatch orders from stock to anywhere in the country
on a next day carrier or discuss individual requirements as appropriate.
General Public
You are more than welcome at our Keswick showroom to make a personal selection
or you may use one of the Contact Us options to discuss
your requirements. Private customers may also specify a commission in order to
meet their personal requirements. Goods order by mail will be dispatched on receipt
of payment.
